New Orleans Work Trip

Lake Edge member Tom Royston working on a wrought-iron grill at the home of Marilyn, a New Orleans social worker, one of over 200 homeowners assisted by UCC volunteers. Join us for our next trip January 9-16, 2011! Contact Amanda Helm to get on the list for notifications about next year's trip, January 9-16, 2011. It'll be a spiritually uplifting, thought-provoking and fun time! The work will involve rebuilding or new construction. Read on for more information about the work and the UCC Rebuilding Homes, Rebuilding Hope volunteer program.

Construction or carpentry skills are certainly welcome, but there'll be plenty of work (and plenty of teachers) for unskilled people too. It's not all work, either -- we do take time to enjoy New Orleans music and food, and we have daily devotions with New Orleans gospel music. You must be at least 16 years old to participate. Costs for 2010 will be around $350.

2010: Lake Edge sent a team of 14 volunteers to New Orleans in January 2010. We worked through the United Church of Christ New Orleans Disaster Recovery program in three different homes. We roofed one home and did finishing work in two others. We stayed in bunks at Little Farms United Church of Christ. We work 8-3:30, with devotions every morning. We managed to squeeze in marching in a Mardi Gras parade, dinner at two New Orleans restaurants, zydeco dancing, and some jazz and piano bar music. This was our fourth annual trip rebuilding since Katrina.
