Opportunities for Lifelong Learners

A presentation at Forum Sunday School -- PowerPoint presentation in the Hearthside Room The United Church of Christ doesn't tell people what to think.
As equal members of the body of Christ, we are all - not just pastors and teachers - called to learn. We study together, respectfully listen to each other, challenge and encourage each other's thinking, and think for ourselves. Questions are valued and encouraged as well as answers. We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God.
God is still speaking, and we listen for new truths.

For fall 2008, Ellen Reuter is teaching the Way of Forgiveness. The focus of this 8-week program is on exploring our call to forgive and be reconciled with others, even as we have been forgiven by and reconciled to God in Jesus Christ. The group meets on Tuesday evenings, beginning September 30 at 6:30 and will aim to be done by the end of November.

Lake Edge periodically offers Companions in Christ, a 28-week spiritual deepening class with daily scriptural study, daily journaling in response to thoughtful questions (provided), and a spiritually rich atmosphere for sharing some of the participants' findings. This is a powerful tool in going deeper in your discipleship, offering both the routine of daily discipline, and the thrill of a small community bonding together over spiritual insights. Many Lake Edgers have completed the program and have bonded with lifelong spiritual companions. The next Companions class will likely be offered in the 2009-2010 year. Contact: Ellen Reuter

Bible Study
A weekly Bible study that meets on Noon on Tuesdays. Readings are based on the Revised Common Lectionary (the scripture readings prescribed for the church's use each Sunday morning). People gather in the Hearthside Room around noon each Tuesday for lunch (light lunch provided, or bring your own brown bag) and by 12:30 the fun begins. Usually all four readings are addressed, two or more versions are examined, and all are welcome to participate in the discussion. Interpretation and application to our lives and our world is encouraged. All are welcome!

Responsive Reading Group
The Responsive Reading group focuses on reading books (primarily non-fiction, but occasionally fiction) that they are compelling, thought-provoking, creative--and that elicit a response from us-- as people of faith, as citizens, and as curious, investigative thinkers. More information
