Opportunities for Lifelong Learners

A presentation at Forum Sunday School -- PowerPoint presentation in the Hearthside Room The United Church of Christ doesn't tell people what to think.
As equal members of the body of Christ, we are all - not just pastors and teachers - called to learn. We study together, respectfully listen to each other, challenge and encourage each other's thinking, and think for ourselves. Questions are valued and encouraged as well as answers. We believe that the persistent search for God produces an authentic relationship with God.
God is still speaking, and we listen for new truths.

Lent: Come and Find the Quiet Center (until April 4)
  • What is Lent?
  • Lenten Labyrinth
  • Ecumenical Lent Wednesday Worship & Supper
  • Holy Week Schedule (Palm Sunday March 28 through Easter Sunday April 4)
  • Exploring the Way Small Group Starts April 11
Designed for the Christian novice and the spiritual veteran alike, it explores the basic concepts of the Christian spiritual life, along with the biblical texts that undergird them. Participants will discover spiritual practices to sustain them on their journey – practices such as sharing faith journeys, Lectio divina (“sacred reading”), breath prayer, holy listening, daily examen (a spiritual self assessment), and simple journaling. Each weekly session consists of a brief time of centering and worship, discussion of the week’s theme, an experiential “taste test” of a specific spiritual practice, and a sending out of participants to experience the spiritual practice on their own. Meets Sundays from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Hearthside Room April 11-June 13. Contact group leader Barb Lewis 222-1005 to sign up. Suggested cost (includes participant book) - $15.00. Scholarships available.
Other Stuff Exploring Lake Edge Classes
Classes are periodically offered to introduce new folks to the Lake Edge UCC community, explaining who we are and how we do things, and answering questions. Seekers and explorers are welcome as well as new and prospective members. Contact Pastor Lisa Schoenwetter 222-8668 if you are interested in being part of the next Exploring Lake Edge series.

Bible Study: Tuesday noon or Wednesday 7 p.m.
Lake Edge offers two time slots for Bible Study lead by Interim Senior Pastor Lisa Schoenwetter. Both groups focus on the Revised Common Lectionary (the scripture readings prescribed for the church's use each Sunday morning), studying the readings for the upcoming Sunday. Start up any time or come when you can. Contact Pastor Lisa Schoenwetter 222-8668 for more information.
Wednesday 7 p.m. Lake Edge's own Wednesday night Vespers service and Bible Study are suspended during Lent. Lake Edgers are encouraged to participate in the ecumenical Wednesday Worship & Supper. Regular Wednesday night Bible Study will resume Wednesday April 7. This Bible study is designed to be meaningful both to people who know nothing about the Bible and those who are conversant with it, with a focus on connecting the scripture with our lives today. If you like, come early for the Vespers worship at 6:00.
    Tuesday noon
The weekly Bible study meets noon-1:30 on Tuesdays (1st, 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays of the month only). People gather in Room 104 around noon each Tuesday for lunch (light lunch provided or bring your own,) and by 12:30 the fun begins. The week's discussion centers on readings that call or challenge group members, two or more versions are examined, and all are welcome to participate in the discussion. Interpretation and application to our lives and our world is actively fostered. This Bible Study continues year-round.

    Faith Studies: 4th Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. including lunch
Led by Carl Pfeiffer, with in-depth discussion of a particular topic. Feel free to start up any time or come when you can. This group meets September through May.
