New Orleans Work Trip

Lake Edge member Tom Royston working on a wrought-iron grill at the home of Marilyn, a New Orleans social worker, one of over 200 homeowners assisted by UCC volunteers. Sign up now for our next trip January 9-16, 2011! Contact Amanda Helm. It'll be a spiritually uplifting, thought-provoking and fun time! The work will involve rebuilding or new construction. Read on for more information about the work and the Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans (RHINO) volunteer program.

Construction or carpentry skills are certainly welcome, but there'll be plenty of work (and plenty of teachers) for unskilled people too. It's not all work, either -- we do take time to enjoy New Orleans music and food, and we have daily devotions with New Orleans gospel music. You must be at least 16 years old to participate. Costs for 2011 will be around $300, plus a few restaurant meals.

2011:This year, we'll be working on restoring a formerly blighted neighborhood that did NOT flood in Katrina, part of a strategic effort to reverse urban sprawl to shrink the city's footprint back to the older, higher-ground neighborhoods. This is a cooperative project with Habitat for Humanity. The houses we will work on are part of a large scale project to restore blocks at a time. A local New Orleans congregation, St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church, initiated, created, funded and manages RHINO. We will be lodged in a budget hotel, 3 to a room.

Brochure about Project Restore Ferry Place. RHINO's previous project was to complete 14 Habitat for Humanity homes. Ferry Place is now complete, and RHINO volunteers are now working on a similar project just a couple blocks over, based on the same strategy.
