How to Lead an Outdoor Sports Ministry Event
Anyone can lead an event with the sport of your choice and the activity of your choice. Most of you bikers, hikers, paddlers etc. can think of a good trail or river off the top of your heads. Just let Outdoor Ministry Coordinator Dave Wilson know your chosen date, time, activity and location, and any advice you have for participants (what to bring etc.), and he will send your event out to the Outdoor Sports Ministry e-mail list.
Interested in having a spin-off Outdoor Sports Ministry? Maybe a regular bike riding group or walking group? Sounds great! If you'd like to lead something like this, we'd be happy to help and to list it as part of the Outdoor Sports Ministry.
Plan ahead! The biggest difference between heading out to your favorite trail yourself and bringing a troop of Lake Edgers with you is just that you have to plan ahead more. The deadline for the Chapel Chimes is the 15th of the preceding month, and you need a minimum of two-and-a-half weeks notice to get it in the e-News and Sunday morning blue sheets for two Sundays before the event. But all you need for those announcements is a date, time, location and activity. Once people sign up, we can give them additional details via e-mail. So it doesn't take much work to plan ahead, it just takes, well, thinking ahead....
The sky's the limit! We'd love to have a mix of quick weekday evening activities and major overnight adventures, of lightweight sports suitable for all ages and more strenuous or skilled sports, of types of outdoor activities. There is no budget for Outdoor Sports Ministry, but it is reasonable to ask participants to pay their own way for trail fees, canoe rental etc. If you have extra equipment to share, that may help others participate or keep rental costs down. We'd like to be sure to include beginner-friendly, all-welcome type events, but if we can also help serious climbers, bikers, paddlers or back-packers bond with each other, that's fine too.
