NOTE: Because of the pandemic, we are worshiping only on Zoom or outdoors at this time. Once the pandemic is under control (and we pray that is soon!), we will head back to the sanctuary. In the meantime, join us at 9:30 on Sunday mornings in the Alliance@4200 Courtyard, right across the street from Frank Allis School. Or join us online at this link.

It is a great privilege for us to be a part of your worship experience.  We know it can be a little unnerving to step into a new place, especially when you're not exactly sure about the details that matter to you.  We've compiled some Frequently Asked Questions below that may be of interest to you. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please contact us via email or phone, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible!

Is this a Christian church?
Yes, though if your understanding of Christianity comes from what you see in the media or hear from political sound bites, you may be surprised by the differences. Lake Edge UCC does have a defined set of beliefs (see What We Believe) similar to many other Christian churches. However, it is our covenants to each other, to the community, and to the world, and how we apply our faith that sets us apart from our more evangelical neighbors. Lake Edge is a safe place to explore your faith, to ask questions, and to be who you are while you are doing it. There is no litmus test, sign up fee, or secret password to be part of our faith community. In fact, many of our most active "members," aren't actually official church members. You are important to God, so you are important to us, no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey.

What should I wear?
There is no dress code. You'll see people in shorts and flip-flops sitting next to people with pants and dress shirts, though most people tend to dress in "business casual."  Just be you, and we will be glad to see you.

What is the church building like?
Lake Edge UCC is comfortable. In the Sanctuary, you'll see the setup for the Praise Team in the front, a projector for multi-media, and fair trade coffee/refreshments in the Hearthside Room next to the Sanctuary that you can bring into church with you. Imagine going to church at your local coffee house. Both the front and the rear entrances are wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator just off the back door. We have done our best to make our church accessible to all. We have a large kitchen and Fellowship Hall at the other end of the building for larger gatherings and ministry projects.

What will the service be like?

Service starts at 9:30 a.m. and lasts about an hour. There are large print bulletins available for folks who ask. We are blessed to have a praise band, an organist, a vocal choir, and a bell choir to help us sing and reflect throughout worship. The schedules vary for each of the music ministries, so be prepared to be surprised. If you're really lucky, you will visit on a Sunday when all music ministries are together. During the service, we will tell you about important activities and events and have a children's message. Then there is a time of teaching, where we strive to provide people with resources to face today's tough problems and issues with messages that are Biblical, relevant, and real. Then we reflect and pray on what God has been saying, what we are learning, and what we should do about it. On the first Sunday of the month, the community celebrates communion together with grape juice and gluten free wafers as the elements, so that everyone can participate without feeling embarrassed or singled out. When there is a fifth Sunday in a month, we worship with our Alliance partners Christ the Solid Rock, Baptist Church, rotating churches and pastors every other time.

What about kids?
We love kids, and we love to share worship with them, watch them play, watch them participate, and watch them grow. Therefore, Sunday School and other activities are held before or after worship. We took out some pews and created an activity space IN FRONT for our young people (or for anyone who listens better when their hands are busy). We brought in rugs, kid-sized furniture, coloring pages, crayons and markers, quiet toys, kid-friendly books and Bibles, and other fun stuff. We also have wiggle-friendly seating, weighted stuffed toys, and noise-reducing headphones for children who need them. Kids will hear a children's story during worship, and those who want to can help serve Communion, collect loose change offerings, and play instruments with the band. For parents who feel the need to sit in a different area with their child for any reason, the Hearthside Room next door has a wall of glass windows to the Sanctuary and sound piped into the room, so you can still be part of the worship service. Said one parent about the activity area, "I wasn't sure this was going to work, but with my children happily occupied nearby, I realized it's the first time in a long time I've really gotten a chance to relax at church and actually worship."

Will I be asked to sign anything, say anything, or be singled out in any way?
We do not ask you to sign anything, although you are certainly welcome to fill out a connection card, which can be found in the pew pocket. This not only lets us know you visited, but is a great way for you to contact us or ask us questions.  But none of this is "required" or pushed on you. We do have friendly greeters, so be prepared to be welcomed, but we will not single you out during the worship service. However, if you visit with friends, we cannot promise they won't announce your presence when it comes time for the community to share "Joys." You should let your friends know if you feel uncomfortable with that.

Where is the church located?
Our faith community gathers at 4200 Buckeye Rd., Madison, WI  53706. There is limited parking and handicapped parking in the parking lot in the back of the church off Hegg Ave. You can also park in the Frank Allis Elementary school parking lot across the street on Buckeye Rd. when school is not in session.
